Primary School - Ages 5-10 (Grades 1-6)

In primary school, students follow the national curriculum, learning subjects such as English, arts, health and physical education, languages, mathematics and statistics, natural sciences, social sciences, and technology.

Students are regularly assessed on their reading, writing, and mathematics skills according to their grade and age, with standards set by the New Zealand National Standards framework.

Intermediate School - Ages 11-12 (Grades 7-8)

Intermediate school serves as the transitional stage between primary and secondary education.

Primary education typically starts at Grade 1 and continues until Grade 8. However, some intermediate schools only offer education for Grades 7 and 8.

Secondary School - Ages 13-18 (Grades 9-13)

New Zealand has three types of secondary schools:

  • Public Schools, where approximately 85% of New Zealand students are enrolled.
  • State-integrated Schools, mostly founded by religious organizations or schools that offer unique teaching methods.
  • Private Schools.

In secondary school (also known as high school or college in New Zealand), students work toward earning the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), which is equivalent to the high school diploma in Vietnam. Secondary schools also offer vocational courses, such as tourism, computing, etc.

In addition to NCEA, some New Zealand secondary schools also offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).
