Changes to the Conditions of the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program in Canada

CANADA

On August 26, 2020, IRCC announced changes to provide more flexibility regarding the eligibility criteria for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program for students starting their studies online from abroad.

► Students can now study online from abroad until April 30, 2021, without it counting against the duration of their future post-graduation work permit, as long as 50% of their program is ultimately completed in Canada.

► Students who have enrolled in a program lasting 8 to 12 months with a start date between May and September 2020 will be able to complete the entire program online from abroad and still be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.

► Students enrolled in a program starting between May and September 2020, studying online until April 30, 2021, and graduating from multiple eligible programs, can combine the duration of their studies when applying for a PGWP in the future.

► Students can apply for a PGWP in the future as long as 50% of their total study time is completed in Canada.

To qualify for these measures, students must apply for a study permit no later than September 15, 2020, for programs starting in the fall.
